Begin Your Spiritual Journey - 1
Where to Start...
It is said that we are spiritual beings having a human experience. That indicates that our whole life experiences are part of this journey, but then why do we often feel disconnected from our spirituality? If you are part of a religion, any religion, you may have trusted that religion takes care of your spirituality, but spirituality is not connected to religion at all. Spirituality is our personal journey and experience. It is our internal journey while religion is external. The bible for example speaks about having a personal relationship with God. That indicates that your own spiritual journey can also be connected to religion. In fact, every one of the main world religions has a spiritual path, but it may not always be obvious. We definitely don’t need religion to embark on our own individual spiritual journeys, but they don’t cancel each other out either.
So, where do we begin?
Everything in life begins with an intention. In this case, an intention to learn and explore and get to know our true selves.
From the moment we are born, we are focused on our families, our caregivers, providers, siblings, and secondly to the communities into which we are born. We are taught to conform, and that’s when our life begins to get difficult. We are not taught to explore ourselves or get to know ourselves. I was born into a church-going family and was taught the rules and prayers and how to behave. But, this brought an emptiness with it that carried through most of my life. Life choices, like profession, which people to date, what to like and dislike in general came from my community and family.
It left an emptiness inside of me. Something that wasn’t fulfilled. In fact, I was a pretty unhappy person. Sarcastic and cynical, I have know that I’m an empath for a long time, but I didn’t know how it affected me every day. When I opened myself to the spiritual journey, I also learned about this gift and how powerful it truly is. I connected with my intuition which is what happens when we start the journey of self-discovery.
Getting to know yourself, connecting with your intuition and your higher self and even finding your life purpose and what really brings you joy are ahead on your journey. It comes with the promise of balance, and a deep fulfilment. It may not always be easy as we will also face the parts of ourself that have been hurt, our sadness, anger, and frustration. We need to take our part of the responsibility not of our mistreatment by others but our mistreatment of others.
I make you one promise though! Every time you deal with a part of yourself, good or bad, you will grow and you will feel deeply satisfied as you uncover who you truly are.
An early mentor shared the following with me. The spiritual journey is easy, all you have to do is love yourself, and love everyone else, you need to forgive yourself for any wrong-doings and forgive everyone else as well. Easy? The formula is easy, following through is harder as there may be pain and sadness, as well as fears that is very deep and we may not even be aware of. The journey will bring all these parts forth. It is worth it though, absolutely 100%! From a spiritual perspective, we are here to learn and grow and we can only do so if we turn inward.
So, let the journey begin.
Mindfulness and meditation are excellent tools on this journey, and I will continue to go into details in the following blogs.
If you are truly at the start of your journey, I recommend checking out my guided meditation on YouTube about connecting with your higher self. You can leave comments or just email me with comments of questions at passagebeyond@gmail.com.
I also strongly suggest to keep a journal handy. In this guided meditation that I made for beginners we will connect with our higher self and ask it questions. You may or may not get an answer during the meditation, but often, our intuitive self might provide answers as well as new thoughts and ideas, and you will not want to miss them. Just write them down, however strange they may appear. You can also join my Facebook group if you would like to engage in the discussion around all things spiritual, mindfulness, and meditation.
